Abstract :
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) provides centralized control for adaptable network management; however, it encounters difficulties in managing high-volume, heterogeneous traffic with rigorous Quality of Service (QoS) standards. This paper suggests a traffic-aware routing system that uses P4 programmable switches to solve these problems by moving essential tasks to the data plane. P4 makes it possible to classify packets, extract features (like 5-tuple, temporal metrics like inter-arrival times, and jitter), and set priorities directly on switches. This reduces the number of times controllers need to interact and lowers overhead. A weighted Dijkstra algorithm dynamically chooses the best paths based on real-time metrics like bandwidth, delay, and loss. Machine learning models trained on datasets like VNAT sort flows into groups like video streaming or VoIP. The system operates in both offline (topology discovery, ML training) and online (monitoring, classification, rule installation) phases when configured in Mininet emulation with the ONOS controller. In both low- and high-congestion situations, experimental results show significant improvements in QoS. This method works exceptionally well for applications that need to be quick, like video streams. It shows that networks can be more efficient, more responsive, and better at using resources in changing environments.
