Silicon photonic microring resonators: A Novel optical router based on Negative-First routing algorithm

Abstract :
Photonic technology is now acknowledged in the academic field as a promising solution to the challenges faced by interconnection networks in current chips. Recent advancements in silicon nanophotonic technologies have established a suitable foundation for constructing photonic communication links that offer higher bandwidths and power efficiency compared to traditional electrical communications. Within photonic networks-on-chip, the router serves as a fundamental component. This academic paper presents a 4×4 non-blocking photonic router based on Micro Ring Resonator (MRR) specifically designed for the Negative-First routing algorithm. The results of simulations demonstrate that our proposed router achieves 32% improvements in terms of insertion loss by reducing the number of waveguide crossings. These improvements leveraging wavelength division-multiplexing lead to obtain higher bandwidth density.
