Abstract :
Artificial empathy, engineered systems that detect, model, and express empathic responses, is a rapidly growing research and product area within AI-based mental health care. Proponents argue that empathic conversational agents can increase engagement, reduce barriers to care, and deliver scalable psychosocial support; critics warn about inauthenticity, safety gaps, and new ethical and regulatory challenges. This review summarizes current architectures and datasets, clinical evidence and efficacy, methods for measuring empathy, technological and evaluation gaps, and the major ethical, safety, and regulatory concerns.
